| In November 2002 club members John Orange, Rob
Cowan, Clive Dudley and Dave Putt attended this excellent DBM Doubles
competition in Pevensey. Here are a few pictures from the
event.

| An early Carthaginian army lined up opposite John Orange and
Clive Dudley's Early Achmaenid Persians.
Note the chariots hiding behind the hill, where they stayed
for the whole game when they realized the Immortals were deployed opposite
them... |
 |
| ...you can just about see them in this picture.
Unfortunately, the Allied Hoplites were unreliable until the very last
turn of the game, so John and Clive spent most of it desperately trying to hold off
massed enemy spearmen with skirmishers, shooting and Thracian Peltasts. A 5-5 result, which
they were quite happy to get! |
 |
| Here's a mid-game shot of the same battle. The allies
have got as far forward as they are going to, and Clive is trying to hold
off Spearmen with Persian Sparabara and Skythian horse archers! |
 |
| Here the Persians are facing Early Hu: a mixture of Warband,
Auxiliaries and vast numbers of Horse Archers. In the centre, the Thracians
and Pathlagonians have just charged into the Hu Auxiliaries, whilst
the Allied Hoplites are squaring off against the Warband. In the
foreground, the Hu cavalry refuse to come near an assortment of Indian,
Bactrian and Saka archers in the scrub. |
 |
| Another view of the same game. The Hoplites were slowly
closing on the Warband. Unfortunately, some of the Persian Sparabara were in reach of the Warband, who
broke through them, and were only stopped by
the intervention of the Greek Cavalry. The Hoplites and Thracians
eventually did enough damage to their opponents to break those commands,
and the casualties caused by the Immortals shooting (out of sight on the
left) were enough to break the army. A 9-1 to John and
Clive. |
 |
| Some of the armies in use had some very interesting baggage
elements: here's an example in a New Kingdom Egyptian army... |
