Open Days 2005

On the weekend of October 22nd/23rd, PAW staged another of our occasional Wargames Open Days at our regular venue, Blindman's Wood Scout HQ.

This time, we had a theme - the Battle of Gettysburg.  The weekend featured a large refight with between 8 and 12 players at any one time, plus some satellite games depicting particular parts of the battle, all using the Fire and Fury rules.

Despite the theme, there were plenty of other games on show: between 25 and 40 wargamers were present at different times of the weekend, playing (amongst others) Warhammer 40K, Warhammer Fantasy, DBM Ancients, Principles of War Napoleonics, MechWarrior, Pirates of the Spanish Main and Babylon 5 starship combat.

Thanks to John Orange for taking these pictures.

Here's a general view of the main hall: note the large group of players clustered around the Gettysburg table in the back left corner.
This was taken early in the day, but there are still plenty of other games in progress around the rest of the hall.

Here, Andy Clark, Steve Pearse and Al Cox run one of the Gettysburg satellite games.  These were run several times over the weekend, with results that largely repeated the historical outcomes.

John Orange faces off against Colin Evans in a 15mm DBM Ancients game.

This is one of the crunch points: Colin's Late Roman Cataphracts are about to charge into John's New Kingdom Egyptian infantry...

...whilst on the right flank, John's massed archers, backed up by chariots, corner a small cavalry command that is supported by Artillery.

Unfortunately, Colin's elite Auxiliary infantry smashed through John's poor quality light troops, and rolled up the flank of the centre before reinforcing chariots could arrive from the victorious right flank, giving Colin the victory.

Clive Dudley supplied both armies for this Warhammer 40K game.   This system has been increasing in popularity at PAW over the last year.

The Blood Pact Sentinels used their Deep Strike ability to drop into the rear of the enemy force, and narrowly avoided crash-landing on an enemy tank.

The ruined houses from the Mordheim range are an excellent basis for 40K scenery

Warhammer Fantasy Battles is another very popular system at PAW, with games being played at most meetings.  In this game, Dwarves stand off the might of Chaos

There were lots of systems played over the weekend, not all of which were photographed, but here's some shots of the Napoleonic and Starship Combat games.
